12 Tips: Mosquito Precautions for Children

Here are some tips and precautions for parents planning to travel with young children:

  1. When using sunscreen, apply it first and wait 30 minutes before applying the DEET repellent.
  2. Always read the entire label carefully before using repellents. Adults should apply repellent for children. Do not allow children to apply it themselves.
  3. Avoid applying repellent to children’s hands to reduce the chance of getting the repellent in their eyes and mouths.
  4. Apply the repellent only on exposed skin surfaces or on top of clothing. Do not use under clothing. Wash treated skin and clothing when protection is no longer needed.
  5. Do not use aerosol or pump sprays directly on the face. Spray your hands and then rub the product over the face. Use only in well-ventilated areas.
  6. Do not use the repellent on open wounds, cuts, or if your skin is irritated or sunburned.
  7. Use mosquito nets on beds and use screens on windows and doors.
  8. Use unscented soap and shampoo. Insects are attracted to the perfume.
  9. It is important to avoid insect bites even if you are taking malaria medication or have been vaccinated against yellow fever or Japanese encephalitis.
  10. Wear light coloured clothes that cover your legs and arms.
  11. Stay in air conditioned accommodation, as this reduces the number of insects in your room.
  12. Stay indoors during the evening when mosquitoes are most active.

And remember to consider the percentage of DEET when buying mosquito repellent for different age groups:

Infants (less than 6 mos)

  • Do not use repellents that contain DEET.
  • Infants should be protected with mosquito netting tucked over baby carriers.

Children (6 mos to 2 yrs)

  • In an area of high risk, one application per day of insect repellent containing DEET may be considered.
  • Use an insect repellent with 10 percent or less DEET sparingly. Prolonged use should be avoided.

Children (2 to 12 yrs)

  • Use an insect repellent with 10 percent or less DEET.
  • Do not apply more than three times per day.
  • Prolonged use should be avoided.

Adults and children (over 12 yrs)

  • Use an insect repellent containing 30 percent or less DEET.
