From learning to leading: Respiratory Therapy experiences at VCH

Marc and Yousef, Respiratory Therapists

At Vancouver Coastal Health, we’re committed to supporting health care professionals at every stage of their journey. In this spotlight, we connect with Marc, a Charge Respiratory Therapist (RT) and Yousef, a newly Employed Student Respiratory Therapist (ESRT), to explore the dynamic world of respiratory therapy and how a culture of mentorship, teamwork and continuous learning empowers growth at VCH.

Marc: Leading with experience and care

Marc (pictured left) began his career at VCH in 2005 as a bedside RT, moving into the Charge RT role at Vancouver General Hospital (VGH) in 2016. While he continues to provide hands-on clinical care, he also coordinates shift teams, manages department operations and ensures safe, efficient delivery of respiratory services throughout the hospital.

He emphasizes the strength of working within an interdisciplinary team where everyone brings something valuable to the table. “The department leaders are committed to bringing out the best in each RT,” says Marc.

Marc also values collaboration and says, “our team constantly seeks opportunities to enhance patient outcomes by managing care based on individual needs. We believe in encouraging a team approach that embraces inclusivity.”

He continues to grow in his leadership capacity; in 2024, Marc stepped into a temporary role covering a maternity leave as the department’s Patient Services Manager. “This experience helped me grow as an individual and deepen my understanding of the healthcare system on a broader scale,” he reflects.

Yousef: Gaining knowledge and confidence

From his first day as an ESRT, Yousef (pictured right) has felt welcomed by a supportive and approachable team and he strongly encourages other students to consider VCH as a place to start their careers. “VCH offers a culture that truly supports student learning,” he says. “You get the chance to practice and refine your skills in an environment where staff are genuinely invested in your growth and success. The mentorship provided has made this a very positive learning environment.”

Yousef plays a key role in managing ventilated patients, supporting discharge planning, and ensuring smooth transitions for those moving to home oxygen. He says what stands out most is the opportunity to see the impact of care in real time. “I love witnessing the difference we make in patients’ lives. It’s inspiring to know that our interventions contribute directly to their recovery.”

Yousef chose VGH because of the highly specialized and diverse patient population. “Working here allows students to gain exposure to complex cases and learn from experienced clinicians,” he explains. “I’ve gained insight into the complexities of long-term ventilation and rehabilitation which I may not have had the chance to see elsewhere.”

Career growth supported with coaching and collaboration

Since his placement, Yousef felt the difference that mentorship and collaboration make. “There’s a strong sense of teamwork and I always feel comfortable reaching out for help,” he says. “Communication is ongoing throughout the shift to ensure patient care remains seamless and no details are missed.”

That supportive spirit is embedded in the structure of the department too as Marc notes that RTs at VGH benefit from being part of a larger team that includes Professional Practice, Educators, Resource Therapists and Charge RTs all working together to advance care. For ongoing professional development, VCH provides dedicated, paid hours for continuing education each year. These can be used for conferences, hands-on learning and regional education days.

Marc and Yousef both look forward to their future at VCH. Yousef looks forward to gaining independence as a clinician and applying his skills to impact patient care, while Marc expresses confidence in the department’s ongoing teamwork. “VGH is home to many great practitioners,” he says. “The RT department is a group that thrives on supporting one another and building on our collective success as a team.”
