Making a meaningful impact through patient care with CT imaging
Meet Shannon Sloan, CT (computed tomography) Supervisor with the Medical Imaging department. She oversees the team of CT technologists at Vancouver General Hospital.
As a CT, her role relies on strong, collaborative teamwork across departments. "CT is essential because it provides critical information such as identifying clots that cause strokes, mapping cancer stages for oncologists, and guiding spine injections that relieve pain," says Shannon. "This information enables doctors to make timely, accurate decisions for patient care."
Shannon enjoys the fast-paced environment and the teamwork her role presents, as well as the close relationships she builds with her fellow technicians, radiologists, nurses, ICU (intensive care unit) and ER (emergency room) staff, and other health care team members. "It is rewarding to know that CT plays a vital role in each patient’s health care journey, often serving as the key to diagnosis and guiding treatment decisions," she says. "Nearly every hospital visit involves some form of imaging."
Connected by learning
Shannon graduated from BCIT with a diploma in Radiography, earned her CT Imaging certificate, recently completed the Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) Frontline Leadership program, and is currently working toward a leadership certificate with CAMRT (Canadian Association of Medical Radiation Technologists).
By engaging in professional development and working closely with the CT Educator, Shannon stays up to date with policies and best practices and in turn shares the knowledge with the team. "I seek feedback to refine my skills and encourage other staff to do the same," she says. "I advocate for open discussions and conversations. By sharing knowledge, we can build a stronger, more informed team."
In 2025, Shannon will celebrate 15 years as a VCH employee. "Thanks to the support and educational opportunities I've received here, I’ve been fortunate to step into a leadership role,” she says.
Making a difference
Shannon tells us that CT technologists handle a wide range of procedures, from head-to-toe scans to supporting radiologists with biopsies, injections, and ablations. The work involves starting IVs, administering contrast, and assisting with diagnostic and therapeutic imaging.
Shannon says getting the opportunity to make a meaningful difference in patients' lives is a big motivator. "Every interaction is a chance to support someone during a vulnerable time."
She speaks highly of the collaborative environment at VCH which inspires her to learn and grow alongside her colleagues. "We all work together which enhances our ability to provide exceptional care," she says. "Knowing that I am a part of a dedicated team striving for the best outcomes keeps my passion for this profession alive."
Join our team
Shannon believes the VGH CT team is one of the best in the province. “We pull together, put patients first, and look out for each other,” she says. “Being one of the busiest imaging departments, we rely heavily on each other's support. The leadership team were all VGH techs once, so they know what it is like to be on the frontlines. They are understanding, supportive, and provide great guidance.”
