Teamwork and care in the Emergency Department: A Registered Nurse’s journey

Amandeep Jawanda, ER RN

Meet Amandeep, a Registered Nurse in the Emergency Department at Richmond Hospital.

She began her career in medical/surgical nursing, then continued her education through completing the BCIT Critical Care Course in Emergency Nursing. This course allowed her to further hone her skills for the fast-paced, world of emergency care.

Amandeep has always been passionate about health care and helping others. "Nursing, especially in emergency care, gives me the opportunity to assist patients and their families during their most vulnerable moments while also offering education on overall health and well-being," she shares.

A dynamic and rewarding role

Every day in the emergency department (ED) brings new challenges and opportunities to impact patients' lives meaningfully. Amandeep explains that you never know what might come through the doors, ranging from trauma cases to assisting with baby deliveries. The role requires a delicate balance of life-saving interventions and comfort in end-of-life situations.

"You need to be competent and thorough in your assessments, apply critical thinking, and be ready to intervene quickly," she says. "Building a trusting nurse-patient relationship is essential and involves delivering compassionate, empathetic, trauma-informed care."

In her practice, Amandeep strives to offer the best holistic and empathetic care to her patients, their families, her team, and herself while promoting inclusivity and diversity. She also enjoys sharing her knowledge as a mentor to nursing students and colleagues. "I continuously seek opportunities for professional growth to enhance my practice, aiming to improve care standards and collaborate on improving access to health care."

A Culture of Teamwork and Support at VCH

Amandeep acknowledges the exceptional teamwork at Vancouver Coastal Health is one of the key factors behind her passion for her role. "We all work together to provide the best care," she says.

The team at Richmond Hospital's ED works seamlessly across roles - from doctors and nurses to paramedics, social workers, and allied health professionals - ensuring a holistic, patient-centered approach to care. "We work closely together and adapt to the ever-changing needs of the department," Amandeep explains. "Clear communication is essential to ensuring our teamwork remains exceptional."

Amandeep values the collaborative nature of the department, where everyone contributes their expertise to achieve optimal outcomes. "When I started in the ED, I was amazed at how everyone worked as a team," Amandeep recalls, noting how colleagues are always ready to support one another, sometimes even before being asked. "We all bring our multicultural diversity and a wide range of knowledge and backgrounds to the team, creating an inclusive culture and a positive working environment. The leadership team supports us and fosters opportunities for professional development."
