From the U.S. to Vancouver, B.C. – a Medical Leader in Psychiatry’s path

Dr. Randall White, Psychiatrist and Medical Leader

Meet Dr. Randall White: He is the Medical Director of the Vancouver Community Complex Adult Mental Health and Substance Use (MHSU) Services, and Clinical Director of the BC Psychosis Program at the University of British Columbia (UBC) Hospital.

Dr. White moved to British Columbia (B.C), Canada, 20 years ago from the United States. He grew up in Atlanta, Georgia, did medical training there and in Washington D.C. “I now feel at home on the Pacific Coast,” he shares.

Shaping care delivery

“Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) is viewed as a crucial organization in the community, and health professionals are valued by patients and families,” he shares. A key aspect of Dr. White's practice is his commitment to equitable, patient-centered care. He strongly believes that every individual should have equal access to health-care services. As a medical director, he supports teams in delivering evidence-based care for people with complex mental illness. His focus is on improving their functioning and health outcomes so that they can pursue their goals and integrate into their community.

“The opportunities for leadership in VCH are numerous,” says Dr. White. He has led the BC Psychosis Program for the past 13 years. Working alongside a dedicated team, he specializes in the evaluation and treatment of individuals with schizophrenia across the province. His efforts aim to improve the treatment for this population and expand the access of substance use disorder care in community programs.

Beginning a new chapter in Vancouver, B.C.

20 years ago, Dr. White and his family relocated from the United States to Vancouver, B.C. “The city and its natural setting along with professional opportunities made the decision fairly easy,” he shared.

Now living in UBC’s Point Grey neighbourhood, Dr. White enjoys the convenience of walking or biking to work, as well as easy access to nearby parks, beaches, forests, and the educational, recreational, and cultural amenities of the campus.
