Scabies is a parasitic infestation of the skin caused by a burrowing mite called Sarcoptes scabiei.
Scabies is a common and highly contagious skin condition. The scabies mite burrows into the upper layer of the skin where it lives and lays its eggs. They cause an intense itching and a pimple-like skin rash on your skin. Scabies can spread rapidly under crowded conditions where close body and skin contact is frequent. Scabies can spread rapidly through close body and skin contact in family, child care group, school class, nursing home or prison.
