VCH trauma unit supports critically injured people
Every year, thousands of British Columbians are critically injured because of major traumatic injuries and Vancouver General Hospital (VGH) is designated as the specialized trauma center for many of those complex cases across B.C. and the Yukon.
Specialty trauma care
One such case was Wayne who was skiing on Whistler’s peak and heading to his favourite viewpoint when he was hit from behind by a high-speed skier, causing him a pelvis injury. He received care at the Whistler Clinic before being transported by ambulance to VGH, a Level-1 Trauma Centre, to get specialized care from a multidisciplinary team of physicians, surgeons, nurses and allied health-care providers dedicated to trauma.
“I was full of gratitude for all the caring and kindness, and my biggest source of strength came from the entire VGH team who were responsible for my feeling of emotional well-being despite feeling vulnerable and in pain. Everyone was so reassuring, and I knew I was in the right hands and that my health and recovery was their priority.”
VGH trauma patient Wayne, who suffered a serious injury while skiing in Whistler. Thanks to the specialized trauma care he received at VGH, Wayne was able to recover and get back to his love of skiing.
