SPEAK OUT! Voice treatment program
Do you have Parkinson's Disease or know someone who does?
Parkinson's disease (PD) is the second most common neurodegenerative disorder after Alzheimer's. Up to 90% of individuals diagnosed with PD are likely to develop dysarthria (difficulties with speech, voice) and/or dysphagia (swallowing impairment) during the course of their disease. Studies have shown that exercise early in the disease is very important in managing the disease and hopefully, slowing down progression.
The Neurological Rehabilitation Outpatient Program (NROP) at Lions Gate Hospital is currently offering the voice treatment program known as SPEAK OUT! and may soon offer The LOUD Crowd, a weekly voice maintenance group for Parkinson's Disease. This is a standardized speech therapy program of 12 individual treatments conducted by a speech-language pathologist (SLP), combined with ongoing weekly group sessions for individuals with dysarthria due to Parkinson's disease (PD). Individuals with PD participating in this treatment learn to "speak with intent", and be purposeful in their speech, rather than speaking automatically. This treatment can be conducted in person or by telehealth sessions.
Should you be interested in this treatment program, and live on the North Shore, please ask your physician for a referral to our speech-language pathologist (SLP) . If you have any questions, you can contact our SLP directly at (604) 984-5851.
The SPEAK OUT! & LOUD Crowd therapy regimens were developed at Parkinson Voice Project in Richardson, TX. You can visit their website at www.ParkinsonVoiceProject.org .
