Stay protected this fall: vaccines are key for people at higher risk of serious illness
Vancouver, B.C. — As fall temperatures drop and respiratory viruses such as influenza begin to circulate, Vancouver Coastal Health reminds people most at risk of serious illness — and those close to them — to get vaccinated.
B.C.’s 2025–26 respiratory-illness campaign follows recommendations from the National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI), prioritizing influenza and COVID-19 vaccines for those most at risk of severe illness, and ensuring they’re available and free of charge to anyone six months and older who wishes to be immunized. Invitations started rolling out Oct. 7, with appointments available now.
VCH Medical Health Officers note that immunization remains the best way to prevent severe outcomes: “Fall and winter is when we see the impact that influenza can have on those most at risk,” said Dr. Meena Dawar, VCH MHO. “For influenza, that includes the youngest and the oldest among us — from six months to five years old, and from 65 and up; as well as people with underlying conditions, pregnant people, health-care workers and others. Influenza vaccine is also recommended for healthy children and adults, as it can prevent illness and time lost from school, work and social functions.”
You can also schedule vaccination against COVID-19 at your appointment, recommended for previously vaccinated and unvaccinated individuals at increased risk of exposure or severe disease, including adults 65+, people with underlying conditions, pregnant individuals, residents of congregate settings, Indigenous peoples, and health-care workers. While COVID-19 is not a seasonal virus and circulates year-round, there is a new formulation of COVID-19 vaccine available this fall which is free, safe and available to everyone six months and older who wishes to be immunized.

Additional prevention
People can further reduce risk this respiratory illness season by staying home when sick, covering coughs and sneezes, and washing hands frequently. These preventative measures not only protect those most vulnerable, but also help keep communities and our health-care system strong throughout the season.
