Actigraphy

The Leon Judah Blackmore Centre for Sleep Disorders at UBC Hospital offers actigraphy to help assess and monitor sleep-wake patterns over several days or weeks.

What to expect

An actigraph is a small, watch-like device worn on the wrist that records movement and light exposure. This information helps clinicians better understand your sleep and activity cycles and provides valuable data for diagnosing and managing certain sleep disorders.

  • You will be scheduled to pick up an actigraph device from the Sleep Clinic.
  • A technologist will provide instructions on how to use the device and keep a sleep diary (if required).
  • The device is worn on your non-dominant wrist, day and night, for the prescribed monitoring period (usually 1–2 weeks).
  • The actigraph continuously records your movement and light exposure to help estimate when you are asleep and awake.
  • The device is waterproof and can usually be worn during daily activities, including showering but not bathing.
  • At the end of the monitoring period, you must return the device promptly to the clinic.

Things to bring when picking up your actigraph

  • Government-issued photo ID.
  • Any forms, diaries, or paperwork requested by your provider or clinic staff.

Preparing for the test

  • Wear the device continuously as instructed, including while sleeping, working, and doing regular activities.
  • Do not remove the device unless advised by the clinic staff.
  • Keep a sleep diary if requested — this helps your care team interpret the actigraphy data.

After the test

  • Return the device to the Sleep Clinic at the end of your monitoring period.
  • The data will first be scored by a registered polysomnographic technologist (RPSGT).
  • The results will then be reviewed and interpreted by a sleep specialist
  • If your HSAT was not ordered by a sleep physician at UBC Hospital, a report will be sent to your referring provider (like your family doctor) who will review the findings with you and recommend next steps for your care.
