Nursing Support Services

Nursing Support Services helps coordinate care for children and youth who need a registered nurse because of complex or fragile medical needs.

• We assess children and youth up to age 19 to confirm if they are eligible for services.
• We offer in-home respite care for children who may:
  • have a tracheostomy
  • use supported ventilation (ventilator, BiPAP or CPAP)
  • have a life-limiting or palliative diagnosis
  • require peritoneal dialysis
  • have other health needs that require a registered nurse
• We work with families to create and carry out individualized health care plans. In schools, we provide delegated care by teaching and supervising school staff to support children who need:
  • diabetes care
  • tube feeding
  • oral suctioning
  • catheterization
• We also help families access the At Home program by completing eligibility assessments for the Ministry of Children and Family Development.

To access our programs, patients need a referral from a physician or nurse practitioner, who is licensed to practice in BC. Referrals are made through BC Children's Hospital.

BC Children's Hospital is available Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Families and care providers can reach out with questions about the services or how to make a referral.
