Cardiology
Cardiac nursing denotes pride and respect for the professional nurse involved in its practice. It is the vital link in a chain of team members planning and facilitating care that offers the cardiac patient re-entry into an active and independent lifestyle. Join us for primary patient responsibility, including intensive care and rehabilitation of the acutely ill cardiac patient, patient and family teaching, being a member of an interdisciplinary care planning team, managing a primary patient load, being a primary support to the patient in changing lifestyle, and being a role model of pride and practice for cardiac nursing.
Critical Care
Critical Care treats patients from all services and programs through a multidisciplinary team of critical care physicians, nurses and allied health professionals. This includes patients who have sustained or are at risk of sustaining life-threatening, single or multiple organ system failures due to disease or injury. Critical care includes Catheterization Laboratory (Cath Lab), Cardiac Care Unit (CCU), Cardiac Surgery Intensive Care Unit (CS ICU), Diagnostic Imaging, Emergency, Intensive Care Unit (ICU), Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU)
Emergency
Our renowned emergency teams navigate complex and often the most critical of cases stemming from all across the province of British Columbia. On average our hospitals see approximately 1,100 patients in our emergency departments each day – that’s roughly one person every two minutes! The ongoing professional development of emergency nurses is supported by an atmosphere of sharing and learning, and includes support from a clinical education team and expert mentors. The multi-disciplinary team collaborate to ensure care is delivered in a safe, timely and patient and family-centered manner.
Nephrology (Renal/Hemodialysis)
A nephrology (renal) nurse is a professional that focuses on kidney health and provides care and educates clients/families about management and treatment of chronic kidney/renal failure, by working both independently and as a member of an interdisciplinary team. Some of the medical problems that nephrology nurses may encounter include polycystic kidney disease, renal cysts, obstructions, and kidney stones.
Maternity (Labour and Delivery, Obstetrics, Perinatal)
As a perinatal nurse, you will provide optimal perinatal care (antepartum, intrapartum and postpartum) to women and babies and their families and deliver exceptional care through assessment, planning, implementation, evaluation and appropriate documentation of care for patients in perinatal services at Lions Gate Hospital, qathet General Hospital, Richmond Hospital, Sechelt Hospital and Squamish General Hospital.
Neonatal ICU
Neonatal nurses are dedicated professionals who care for the most fragile patients – sick and premature newborns, and are often on the front lines, providing help and support to parents and caregivers in Richmond Hospital and Lions Gate Hospital. NICU nurses care for and monitor infants who experience problems shortly after birth, sometimes for weeks or months until they are healthy and developed enough to go home. It also encompasses care for infants who experience long-term problems related to prematurity or illness after birth.
Pediatrics
Pediatric nurses provide care for children from infancy through their late teens and their families. A pediatric nurse focuses on the care of pediatric patients, recognizing that children have unique healthcare needs that require specialized knowledge and expertise while working with their families to address concerns and help them understand treatment options located in Richmond Hospital and Lions Gate Hospital.
Perioperative/Operating Room (OR)
Perioperative nurses have the opportunity to work in Level 1, Level 2, Community and Coastal Community Hospitals. Perioperative services with VCH include cardiac, thoracic, vascular, neurosurgery, spine, orthopedic, solid organ transplant, ophthalmology, plastics, gynecology, general and robotic surgery.
Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU)
Post-anesthesia care unit (PACU) nurses work in the recovery room and care for patients who have gone under anesthesia. PACU nurses are responsible for observing and treating patients post-operation and ensuring that they safely awake from anesthesia by monitoring vital signs and levels of consciousness.
